In numerical modelling, there are different possibilities for considering nonlinearities, i.e. material nonlinearities and geometrical nonlinearities. Material nonlinearities characterize material capacities, e.g. yielding and tensile strength, while the geometrical nonlinearities represent the internal forces produced due to the deformed state of structural systems. The evaluation of geometrical nonlinearities can be performed using nonlinear analysis, which is time-consuming and computer-demanding, or by simplified procedures based on second-order theory, which is faster and easier. Nevertheless, the second-order theory is a linearization of the geometrically nonlinear analysis, and is, therefore, valid under certain assumptions and constraints.

In this context, the special project focuses on evaluating until which point the second-order theory is able to represent the nonlinear geometrical analysis accurately enough. The students will have to perform numerical models comparing both procedures for different types of structures and conclude their findings.
