In this seminar, we explore the history of the impression of
reality. We try to find ways to study how what people experience as real changes, how the (technological)
settings that are considered as evoking such impressions change, how the way the impression of
reality has been theorised has changed. Our readings follow the impression of
reality from the theoretician’s desk to the psychological or the technology lab
and back. A more extensive thematic description is found in Bison.
This semester, the seminar focuses on the supervised writing of a research paper. The paper can be on a topic of one’s choice, related to the seminar theme. There will be a few initial video meetings, but much of the seminar will consist of developing different steps of your paper and giving feedback to the drafts of others, in a weekly rhythm. Through our different approaches, we explore what it can mean that our sense of reality has a history.
