Lecturer: Associate Professor Stephan Jacobs / Boston USA How did early studies of optics and light-sensitive materials influence industrial economies, art, and human perception of self, time, and space? A tactile investigation of the principles of Photography’s scientific and creative foundations provides perspective, inspiration, and practical strategies anew for contemporary artists and designers. Perhaps historical hindsight affords some foresight. With a hands-on approach, the materials, methodologies, and chronicle of Proto-Photography will be examined. Participants will review, test and apply the use of camera obscuras, refracted light projections, early optics, and pre-silver emulsions to create original visual works. The workshop’s pairing of quotidian materials and workspaces with complimentary digital imaging technologies and workflow offer Pandemic Era students an opportunity to work intensively with non-toxic, tangible materials and processes independent of sanctioned photography laboratories and studios. 6-course meetings.
