Albania is one of the most unknown countries in Europe. Over
centuries, it suffered of political changes and repressions - especially
in the 20th century, with a fascistic occupation and communist
dictatorship. In Tirana, the capital city, one can observe those
cultural, social and political eras. Architecture and Urbanism witness
these times.
The seminar and field trip aim to discover an alien city in a new cultural context. Students will transfer their knowledge from the theoretical sessions (especially on Actor-Network-Theory) to architectural objects. Thus, historical, cultural, political, social and economic interrelations will become obvious. Furthermore, photography will be a medium of knowledge. Supported by Tobias Adam, photographer, Students will analyse existing images of built objects and they themselves will take photographs of buildings and urban structures. The findings will be collected in a corresponding architecture guide of Tirana.
